“Germany has always been a country full of diversity. People from other countries and cultures have contributed to that, as has the transformation to a society of plural lifestyles and worldviews. On the one hand, the speed of this transformation in today’s age of globalisation, as we search for opportunities for personal development and improvements in living conditions, makes us more flexible and mobile. On the other, the diversity of the unknown in globalisation also makes us ask increasingly about the basis for societal cohesion.
What makes up a lively but at the same time stable society? How can we best succeed in international competition in the future? Trailblazing answers to these questions can only be found if the prerequisite of shared values is met. It is important to recognise and acknowledge, to promote and make use of the diversity of the experiences, talents and needs on the basis of shared values. That is why I am happy to take on the patronage of the initiative ‘Diversity as opportunity – the Charta der Vielfalt of companies in Germany’. It is an important contribution to a culture of diversity and the cohesion of our society on the basis of mutual acceptance and trust. I wish it many more signatories for the future.“
